What is an In-Vehicle Unit (IU)

In-Vehicle Unit is a mandatory device to install for all vehicles registered in Singapore and is mounted under the windshield on the right side of the dashboard. Insert your cash card or alternative cards into your device and the money will be automatically deducted as you pass through the Electric Road Pricing (ERP) gantry, or when you enter an Electric Parking System (EPS) carpark.

 

Old Vs. New IU

There are two kinds of In-Vehicle Unit on the road: The Old IU, and the New IU/Dual-Mode IU.

Old IU

The following cash cards listed are accepted:

-        NETS CashCard

 

New IU

The new IU/Dual-Mode IU is about 34% to 50% smaller than the old IU and is currently the one being used by most drivers on the road. However, it also depends on what vehicle you’re driving.

-        NETS Motoring Card
-        Credit Cards
-        CEPAS-compliant cards (EZ-Link, NETS, TransitLink)
-        AUTOPASS Flashpay

The new IU interface shows both the amount deducted and the balance on your card. If you decide to use a CEPAS compliant card, you can automatic top-up your card when the balance drops below a certain amount.

Where to Find My IU Number?

Every IU has its own unique registration number for identification. It’s called the “IU number” and is a 10-digit number located on a sticker on your in-vehicle unit.

How to Repair, Replace or Remove an IU

You’ll need to send your vehicle to an approved inspection centre to have your IU removed. If you accidentally damaged your IU, you’ll need to get it repaired (assuming your warranty hasn’t expired). However, if your warranty has expired, you would most likely have to replace your IU. The removal of IU comes with a service fee of about SGD 15 at every service centre.
