When parking lots are full, customers are often seen to driving around aimlessly. Some customers simply give up and go to a location with a pleasant parking experience. Parking Guidance System help businesses maximize the value of their parking lots and have become popular in car parks around the world.

What is Parking Guidance Systems?

Parking Guidance Systems (PGS) is an advanced car counting or vehicle detecting system that offers dynamic data to improve car park circulation and space optimization. These are often found in large multi-story vehicle parks such as shopping centres but can utilized in other locations as well. These systems use communication, traffic monitoring, and Variable Message Signs (VMS) to provide a comprehensive service.

Key Components of Parking Guidance Systems

A parking guidance system is comprised of a few different parts, and the vast majority of systems require these parts to function at maximum efficiency.

Each system may have a minor differences, but the core concept is similar.

Vehicles – the system is designed to count and manage vehicles within the car park. Without vehicles present, the system will not have anything to count.

Signs – parking signs assist drivers identify available spaces within a car park. They provide real-time information to drivers from the entry and throughout their parking trip.

Detectors - there are multiple variants of the underlying technology that determines whether or not a parking spot is occupied. On the other hand, it can detect when a car enters and exits the parking spot.

Indicators - in most cases, there will be the LED lights placed directly above empty parking spots to 'signal' where you can park. Generally speaking, the colour green indicates a free parking spot, while the colour red indicates that it is already taken.

Control Systems – Information is gathered and distributed from this hub. Collecting data on cars and free parking spots and displaying it to drivers.

Network Controller – network controller is to sum up all parking data from video detectors and transmit them to server, then transfer commands from server to LED display.

How Parking Guidance System work

How Do Parking Guidance Systems Work

Parking guidance systems use several technologies to help motorists find available parking spots with minimal time and effort spent searching.

PGS creates an easy-to-use parking environment by integrating technologies including traffic monitoring, Variable Message Signs (VMS), onsite communication, and vehicle processing.

One of the most common ways Parking Guidance Systems works are by following process.

  1. Each vehicle that enters the parking lot is “scanned” through the In-Vehicle Unit of each individual cars.

  2. Variable Message Signs direct drivers to the empty parking spaces. There are a number of ways to achieve this, including letting customers know how many parking spots are available: on their floor, in a certain floor of the car park, and even down each row of the parking structure.

  3. Free parking spots can be easily located with the help of Parking Space Indicators. Usually, green LEDs are used, but other colours are possible.

  4. The sensor above each parking spaces will detect the presence of the vehicle when parking in, reducing the number of available spots. In most cases, the red light on the LED indicates that the spot has been taken.

  5. After the vehicle has completely left the parking spot, the sensor will be marked as available again with green LED and next vehicle will be directed there.

This is an example of how a Parking Guidance System might function to help illustrate its operation in real-life scenario. All systems are different, but this should give you an idea of how the system works.
